We've marveled at Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi's ability to remain in office despite his fondness for Holocaust jokes , underage Moroccan runaways named Ruby the Heart Stealer , and 'bunga bunga' parties at his villa outside Milan, which include everything you'd expect from a 'bunga bunga' party hosted by Silvio Berlusconi. How to explain the man's remarkable resiliency? We'd suggest that the year-old embattled prime minister--like countless other year-old embattled prime ministers before him--has benefited from the press heretofore refraining from publishing any photos of the aging prime minister "naked in the company of young women. That could be changing, now Italian tabloids are in a bidding war for new images of Berlusconi "naked in the company of young women. This article is from the archive of our partner The Wire. Italian museum heist scores 15 million euros in art masterpieces from Verona Museum
ROME — A decision to cover up nude statues from Roman antiquity during a visit by President Hassan Rouhani of Iran has drawn ridicule and scorn in Italy — much of it directed at the Italian government — and spurred a debate about the national identity. But it also left Italians asking a basic question: Who ordered the cover-up? Some media reports suggested the Iranian delegation had asked Italian officials to hide the statues to avoid Mr. Rouhani any potential embarrassment. Other reports fingered nervous and perhaps overzealous Italian bureaucrats.

Berlusconi fury over naked photos Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi has reacted angrily to the publication in Spain of photographs showing topless women and a naked man at his villa. He also faces a probe for using state aircraft to fly guests to Sardinia. The prime minister is said to have used Italian aircraft to ferry guests to and Villa Certosa, "almost every weekend" between the summer of and January of this year, El Pais reports. Mr Berlusconi is being investigated for misuse of public funds, and confirmed on Thursday that he had been formally placed under investigation by prosecutors. But said the probe would be "swiftly shelved", insisting he was allowed to transport "people he needs" for security reasons. Mystery man Under the headline "The pictures vetoed by Berlusconi", El Pais on Friday published five photos shot by photographer Antonello Zappadu from outside the gates of the Berlusconi villa. In the first, the face of the Italian prime minister — recently embroiled in a public row over his friendship with an year-old model — can be clearly seen.
Once again, the Italian government is in crisis. Only 14 months after the coalition between the nationalist League and the 5 Star Movement M5S was formed, it is on the verge of collapse. In an attempt to break free from the largely ceremonial role awarded him, Conte is battling to wrest power from Salvini. In a move typical of his bullish style, Salvini is pushing hard for snap elections to capitalise on a peak in popularity. Crucially, this means that his push for snap elections may still fail. Ultimately, it will fall to the president, Sergio Mattarella, to dissolve the government and call fresh elections. After four months of deadlock and failure to reach a compromise between the League and the M5S, Conte was chosen as prime minister in June because he was a little-known law professor with no political experience. In little over a year, Salvini has succeeded in pulling Italy significantly to the right, dictating the government agenda with little resistance from Conte. However, more recently Conte has attempted to act independently of the coalition partners, issuing an ultimatum to Salvini and Di Maio in June with a threat to resign as prime minister if differences were not resolved.
