American character actor and writer Wallace Shawn has one of those fun, mischievously homely faces just made to entertain. Though he got out of the starting gate rather slowly, he has since excelled on stage, television and film while managing to turn himself into a winner with his loser-type looks. Woody Allen 's character in the movie Manhattan amusingly describes Wallace's character as "a homunculus", which is a pretty fair description of this predominantly bald, wan, pucker-mouthed, butterball-framed, slightly lisping gent. Wallace made his movie debut in Allen's heralded classic playing Diane Keaton 's ex-husband. His brother is composer Allen Shawn. However, a keen interest in writing and acting soon compelled him to leave his cushy position and pursue a stage career as both playwright and actor. During his distinguished career, Wallace turned out several plays.
Wallace Michael Shawn born November 12, is an American character actor , voice artist, comedian, playwright and essayist. John Sturgis in Young Sheldon. He also co-wrote the screenplay for My Dinner with Andre with Andre Gregory , and scripted A Master Builder , a film adaptation of the play by Henrik Ibsen , which he also starred in. Shawn was born in New York City , to a Jewish family. He has two younger siblings, twins Allen , a composer  and Mary Shawn, who is autistic and lives in an institution. He studied philosophy, politics and economics, as well as Latin, at Magdalen College, Oxford , originally intending to become a diplomat. He also traveled to India as an English teacher on a Fulbright program. He then taught Latin in Manhattan but since has made his living primarily as an actor. Shawn's early plays, such as Marie and Bruce , portrayed emotional and sexual conflicts in an absurdist style, with language both lyrical and violent.
He studied history at Harvard University and then philosophy and economics at Magdalen College, Oxford, before turning to playwriting after returning to New York. His first produced work was Our Late Night , which premiered in and won an Obie Award for playwriting. The movie re-created a real-life dinner between the two principals, and the plot simply consisted of a long, meandering philosophical conversation, unusual subject matter for a modest box-office hit. Shawn went on to have memorable roles in four more Allen movies and in such films as The Princess Bride , Vanya on 42nd Street , and Clueless Throughout his career, Shawn acted on television as well, including a recurring role on the —97 Clueless spin-off. Meanwhile, Shawn produced highly lauded dramas. The Designated Mourner ; film touched on similar ground, telling the story—through actionless narrations by the three characters—of educated and privileged people who grapple with their humanity during a chaotic civil war in an unnamed country.
